Review: Baul Mon Resort – Shantiniketan’s hidden gem

Review: Baul Mon Resort – Shantiniketan’s hidden gem

Shantiniketan is West Bengal’s soul of art and literature and a world famous tourist spot as well. Given its popularity over the years Shantiniketan has several hotels and guest houses, but it is difficult to guess which ones to stay at. The ones already popular don’t come cheap and the ones good but not too popular are not easy to find due to lack of information on internet and booking websites.

During my search for one such place that would provide me the rural life experience I came across this resort called ‘Baul Mon’. Best not booked via online booking website, since even though the resort is listed in a few booking websites but they do not officially take bookings made via booking websites. Best is to book by calling them, details available at www.baulmonn.in .

The main building

The Space: The resort is just the kind of place you would want to stay in on a trip to a country side place like Shantiniketan. Abundant with green trees and ample space, the resort has cottages as well as rooms in 2 storey buildings. Rooms are big and clean. There is a restaurant as well serving all 2 meals, but the restaurant needs to be informed in advance if you want to have your meals the restaurant.

What I liked: Abundant space to chill, a stage for Baul singer performances that take place on evenings. There is also a huge cage with pretty love birds and they also have a bunch of rabbits and a dozen pet dogs. It is a great way to spend the mornings watching the pets and feeding the rabbits. The backside of the resort is a huge rice field and as the night sets in, there is pin drop silence and all one can hear is the sound of fire flies. In winters, ask the resort staff to light a bonfire, and it is even such a lovely experience to enjoy some time in the midst of peace and calm. Personally for me I would definitely return back to this place to stay.

Feeding the rabbits in the morning
The rice fields behind my cottage
A sculpture in the Resort garden
Lovebirds in the garden
Pebbled lanes inside the resort
Pet dogs in the resort napping in the afternoon

What is not there: Of course as described above, you might have guessed this is a no flare place, so it would be unreasonable to expect flare and show. The resort is simple and neat with all basic amenities and justifies the essence of the Shantiniketan, simple and peaceful. I personally feel that coming to Shantiniketan and wanting to stay in a fancy hotel or resort takes away the spirit of enjoying the rural country side experience, although this is just my opinion.

Review: Hotel Annamalai, Pondicherry

Hotel Annamalai, Pondicherry

Hotel Annamalai is one of the modern day hotels in Pondicherry. Conveniently placed in the heart of the city, this is a great place to stay if you are looking for a hotel with all modern facilities like swimming pool, bar, buffet breakfasts, capsule lift.

Pros:

capsule elevator

Location: Great location , although not in Heritage town, yet it is centrally located and for anyone travelling to Pondy by bus from Chennai, there is a bus stop very near to hotel. One could walk to the hotel from the bus stop. The hotel has an auto stand right next to it and also the bus terminus is at a distance of 15 mins.

Rooms and amenities: The hotel is well equipped with all modern amenities, rooms are spacious and have air conditioning, tea makers & mini fridge as well. The hotel also has a capsule elevator, something that is not so commonly found in hotels nowadays.

Others: There is a swimming pool in the terrace, and a restaurant with bar facilities. The hotel also helps in arranging for a scooty if required for at a reasonable price. The breakfast buffet is pretty decent as well.

Staff: In general the staff can speak and understand english and hindi and is pretty hospitable and helpful.

Cons:

Although the it is a little under maintained.  I found the water to be not so clean and also there is no strict rules about costumes in the swimming pool. While I was at the pool I had a few guests who went into the pool with t-shirts and briefs. Maybe this explains the not so clean water.

Also the fact that the hotel is not in Heritage town steals away the charm of staying in Pondicherry and waking up to the typical french architecture.

Review: Eee Cee Hotel

Eee Cee Hotel in Shillong:

Situated at the heart of Shillong, Police Bazar, at a stone’s throw from the central point of the market, the location is as convenient as it can get. Floored in wood finish it looks and stands out as pretty classy and colonial.

Pros:

Location: It is located right at the center of the city and it the best place to stay location wise.

Restaurant: They also have a restaurant which serves some of the best food in the city and definitely try out their bakery, really delicious bakes.

Cons:

Cost: The Standard double bedroom costs Rs 2000 (approx.) in off season. I found this a bit on the expensive side given the hotel amenities.

Staff: The staff seemed lazy in general, only after repeated reminders did we get our issues addressed

Room service: The room service is pretty slow and the food served in room service was not upto the mark unfortunately
